The traditional twofold role of Waste-to-Energy seems unlikely to change in the near future. Global levels of landfilled waste continue to rise, and demands for regional energy independence feature high on political agendas all over the world. Waste-to-Energy is a crucial part of the solution to both of these challenges.

With the growing emphasis on circular economies based on recycled and recyclable materials – Waste-to-Energy has come to play yet another vital role. This is the role of ensuring good quality recycling and eliminating the polluted waste materials, which are not suitable for recycling.

At the same time, the growing emphasis on creating circular economies based on recycled and recyclable materials requires high quality, closed loop waste management. In this regard, Waste-to-Energy also plays an important role in eliminating the polluted waste materials, which are not suitable for recycling and which should not be part of the closed loops.

This is not an easy role to play. The circular economy demands a more intimate connection between the Waste-to-Energy, material recycling and reprocessing sectors. Following this, there is a need for cross-sectorial collaboration with new types of stakeholders who have not been a traditional part of the Waste-to-Energy sectors.

Focus of the conference

The international conference on “Waste-to-Energy in the circular economy” aims to connect leading experts, companies and top policy makers from across Europe in joint discussions about the future role of the Waste-to-Energy sectors in the context of the circular economy. How do we ensure complimentarity between WtE and material recycling? How can the Waste-to-Energy sector benefit from the circular economy? – These are some of the central questions to be discussed.

The conference includes high-level keynote speeches, interactive workshop sessions, and B2B matchmaking.

Who will participate?

The conference will bring together 130 leading experts, decision makers, technology and service providers from across Europe. The conference is organizes as a joint event between DAKOFA (Waste and Resource Network Denmark), CLEAN, Ramboll, and several European partners. It also serves as the final event of the 3-year EU-project “Coolsweep”, which focuses on cross-regional development of the European Waste-to-Energy sectors.
